Spring Deck Maintenance

Spring is now here, and for many homeowners, that means it’s time to take a good look at what needs done to their wooden decks. You’ll want to be ready for parties, family gatherings, grilling, and enjoying Mother Nature again. So, now is the time to take a good look at doing some spring deck maintenance.

KEEP IT CLEAN: If you plan any maintenance on your deck, clear it of any dirt, mildew, or mold that may have accumulated over the winter. Get a deck cleaner solution. Rinse, scrub in a solution, and rinse. There are numerous cleaners that are compatible with pressure washers or stiff bristle brushes.

FRESHEN UP: If winter took a toll and there is peeling paint or discolored semi-transparent stain on their deck, it’s time to re-coat it. You might need a deck stripper and wood brightener depending on your coating, and the current condition of it.

GET READY FOR A FACELIFT: If it’s heavily-worn or damaged you might just need to get a deck resurfacer coating. These thick coatings can help delay replacing the deck altogether, when cleaning and brightening aren’t enough. An example is the Cabot “Deck Correct,” which is like a paint, but designed to be used on decks. Cabot offers several different colors

DON’T WAIT: You’ll be glad you took addressed some spring deck maintenance, not only to have it done before the heat of the summer arrives, humidity increases, and you’d just rather be out enjoying the deck rather than working on it.
